How to Make Fall Morning Walks Cozy and Safe for You and Your Dog

Fall is here! 🍂 The mornings are getting darker and cooler, but that doesn’t stop our pups from needing their daily walks to stay happy and healthy.

As the season changes, I’ve gathered some of the best tips to make those early morning fall walks cozy, safe, and enjoyable for both you and your dog.

Step 1: Layer Up (For You and Your Pup)

Here in the Fraser Valley, the temperature is starting to dip into the low teens most mornings, and it’s only going to get colder. The trick to staying comfortable is layering up, since the temperature at the start of your walk can be very different from the end.

And don’t forget about your dog! While my Golden Retriever Winston does fine in the cooler weather, smaller dogs or short-haired breeds might need a lightweight dog sweater or jacket when it gets really chilly. You can always take it off as things warm up.

Step 2: Adjust Your Routine for Shorter Days

It feels like just yesterday the sun was shining at 6 a.m. Now, it’s a different story—it’s dark when we leave the house.

If you’re able to, try adjusting your walks to a bit later in the morning when it’s light out. But if your schedule doesn’t allow for that, you might want to switch up your route to somewhere more well-lit and familiar. For example, I won’t take Winston along the river trail in the dark because visibility is low, and we often encounter bears.

Step 3: See and Be Seen

If you’re walking before the sun comes up, visibility is crucial for both you and your dog. You want to be sure you can see where you’re going and that others can see you.

Investing in reflective gear and lights is not only about safety but also peace of mind. A reflective leash, collar, or harness ensures that drivers, cyclists, and other walkers can see you from a distance. I also attach an LED light to Winston’s harness and wear one on my arm. The bright green glow makes us easy to spot.

And, trust me, bring a flashlight. Trying to pick up poop in the dark is no fun! 🤣

Pro Tip: Look for reflective leashes or light-up harnesses to ensure visibility from all angles.

Step 4: Watch Out for Fall Hazards

With all those beautiful falling leaves comes the potential for hidden hazards. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to pull Winston away from a tempting pile of leaves only to find sticks, rocks, or even trash hiding underneath.

Also, be mindful of seasonal plants like mushrooms, which tend to pop up after rain. Some types are toxic to dogs, and curious pups like Winston are always sniffing around. It’s worth being extra cautious during fall walks, especially in wooded or park areas.

Pro Tip: Give your dog a quick paw check after walks to make sure they haven’t stepped on something sharp or picked up any unwanted debris.

Step 5: Carry the Right Gear

It goes without saying, but make sure you’ve got everything you need before heading out the door. For me, that includes plenty of poop bags (I always pack a spare roll), a flashlight, and enough treats to reward or distract Winston when necessary.

I also keep my phone handy in case of emergencies, but I prefer to walk without earbuds or music in the mornings. It helps me stay alert to my surroundings and be more present with Winston.

A Beautiful Time of Year

Fall (or Autumn, as we say in Australia) is my favorite season of the year. The weather cools down, the leaves turn to beautiful shades of rust and gold, and the scenery is completely transformed.

With just a little bit of preparation, your morning walks can be stress-free, allowing you to soak in all the beauty of the season. Don’t forget to enjoy every moment—fall only comes around once a year!

Stay cozy, and give your pup an extra belly rub from us!

Happy walking!
